Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang will have surgery Wednesday in London after a serious injury to the Achilles tendon he suffered on Tuesday in the first round of 110 meter hurdles, said an official of the Asian delegation.
The gold medalist in Athens-2004, which received millions of messages of support from his country, returned to China after the operation, said the leader.
"It will be operated today (Wednesday)," said the spokesman of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Zhang Haifeng, told AFP.
"British and Chinese doctors examined him on Tuesday. Has almost broken his right tendon," the spokesman added.
Liu ran against the first obstacle in his series on Tuesday and fell. After being helped to his feet, limping finished the tour, passing by symbolically kissing the fences and the last one.
